Your Questions About Building A Shed Plans

Lisa asks…

Anyone have plans for a run in shed?

I am building a 12 ft by 12ft run in shed for 2 minis and possibly going to add a chicken coop on to it. Does any one have any plans to make a cheap run-in. I am buying rough cut lumber from a local mill and it has been a debate of have many boards to buy. I am not going to sink the post into the ground since it is frozen, I already have to torch the ground to put electric fence poles in. Also would you use wire or tape electric fence. So does anyone have plans to build a 12′ x 12′ run is shed with a pitched roof or a picture to give me an idea.

admin answers:

You could try to draw the shed plans yourself. Just a suggestion since I havent seen any answers. Just be creative, you know you need a frame. Triangles are stronger than squares. Do you have any family or friends that could help you? There might be videos on how to build things on youtube.com. My dad and I built a chicken coop and just used 2×4′s and chicken wire, with V nails to hold it on. Hope I helped you a little at least.

Your Questions About Build A Shed Roof

Michael asks…

How should I build the roof of this shed?

I’m building a 10′x12′ shed and am ready to install the roof. I’ve been torn between using trusses, or building traditionally with a ridge board and applying rafters one at a time.

If I go with the traditional ridge board style:

1) what size rafters and ridge board must I use? Can I get by with 2×4 rafters and a 2×6 ridge board? btw -walls are built 16″ oc so I would build the rafters same spacing.

2) Do I need to install ceiling joists, or is the shed small enough that joists are not necessary?

btw – it doesn’t snow where i live so excess load isn’t a factor.

admin answers:

2×4 @ 16″ O.C. Have a span of 8′-9″ for light roofing material w/o ceiling (gyp. Bd.). The ceiling joists, among other uses, work as a drag strut to keep the top walls from spreading out due to load of roof. Even though your shed is only 120 sq. Ft. You might consider placing at least one 2×4 ceiling joist (strut) mid span. The CBC and UBC require a ridge board to be one size larger than the rafter…

Good luck.

Your Questions About How To Build A Shed Roof Over A Deck

Jenny asks…

Attaching roof ledger to fascia board?

I have a newly built single story home with a deck built onto the back. I want to build ashed” style sloping roof off of my existing roof over the deck. Ive read there are several different ways to attach a ledger board and it seems to me the easiest is to bolt it directly into the fascia. One article mentioned that this is only good if your roof joists are strong enough. How do I know? I really dont want to mount it below the roof joists and then have to cut shingles and roof off so I really like the option of going directly into the fascia plus I think it will look more seamless that way. The cover will be about 14×13 feet covered with shingles. Any advice and help would be much appreciated. Thanks

admin answers:

To maintain a secure seat for the roof, remove the fascia, existing shingles and roof sheathing back to the house side of the top plate. Secure the new joist to the top plate, install the new sheathing and install the new shingles. The new joist can be toe nailed to the plate and through nailed to the adjacent existing joist to increase the strength of the joint.
The existing fascia board is not structural, it is a closure piece and installed for aesthetics. Fastening into the end grain of a piece of wood is not recommended, lag screws, etc. Can not come close to developing the strength of the wood member. The 13′ or 14′ span on the new roof will add a significant load to the wall but it should provide adequate support.
Without having a wall around the new addition you should make certain to provide for the potential wind uplift load on the open roof. The support columns, assuming completely open on three sides, should be secured with a strap to the top plate and should be anchored with an anchor bolt to it’s foundation. A high wind into the pocket under the new roof can create a large uplift force on the roof. The support members should be checked for their load capacity on the 13′ or 14′ span. Some supplemental supports or larger than normal members may be required if the roof will be subjected to large roof loadings. Snow load?

What ever you do, do not try to support the ends of the new roof members, by trying to fasten them by end grain fasteners. Doing things the wrong way does not make it correct, no matter how long you have been incorrect.

Your Questions About Build Shed Base

Betty asks…

How high to build garden shed (UK). Neighbour says mine is too high 7ft 6 inch at front and 7ft at back.?

I realise there is a limit otherwise people would be living in them but what is the UK Regs for a garden shed height please. Base is 10ft x 8ft and I have been very careful so as not to block sun etc and it actually is alongside their own fence. Thanks

admin answers:

Just phone your local council and ask for the building regs dept. Someone in there should be able to tell you the correct information, then you will know for sure how big you can go, and it won’t matter what your neighbours say because you will have the correct info.

Your Questions About Building A Shed Floor

Donna asks…

building design?

I’m looking for any good ideas on building a shed for a pony. I would like to put it on skids, so I can move it from different places in the field. Also I need ideas on how to design it with one side having a floor for storage, and one side use the earth.

admin answers:

Look for ideas in Lowes and Home Depot, but look at the catalogues, there are far more in there than on show, they do do animal shelters and stables too

Your Questions About Build A Shed Kit

David asks…

Would it be less expensive to build a storage shed from scratch or buy a shed or kit?

admin answers:

It depends. Most likely you would come out cheaper if you buy the materials and build the shed from scratch. However, this is option depends on your skill level with construction. Building a shed is not overly difficult, especially if you have someone you can ask to either help you or atleast advise you should you get stumped.

Try to buy your materials planning for minimal waste – which may require buying some longer boards that can be used twice. By this I mean if you figure you need X amount of 2×4′s 5′ long and the shortest length you can buy is 6′ long, consider buying 10′ boards which are cheaper per foot and you don’t have any waste. You don’t want to finish the job with a pile of boards 2′ and 3′ long as this is wasteful and costly.

Your Questions About Build Shed Door

Robert asks…

how to put a door or make a door on plywood im building a shed of plywood?

me and my friend are making an 8×8 plywood fort/shed for us to chill in but we have one problem we don’t know how we are going to make a door or put a door on plywood please no stupid answers only answers that can help me thanks

admin answers:

Use a piece of 5/8″ plywood, (pattern T11 looks nice), and then use 1×4 pine boards to frame out the 4 sides with one horizontal piece in the center. This keeps the plywood from warping and provides a solid base for your hinges.

Your Questions About Building A Shed Door

Betty asks…

Building advise with shed.?

I am looking ti build a block shed. 10 x 8 x 8
no windows just a door.

Would someone be able to tell me roughly how many blocks, building sand, cement bags i will need?, will i need a pillow/post in the shed for support?, how deep/wide will the foundation have to be and do i need the plastic sheet under foundation?. also what is the best type of roof?

thanks

admin answers:

Depends on the soil and the amount of rain you get. If you have wet soil you should have around 4-6 inches of crushed limestone as a base. You can use a sand and gravel mix for the floor but if you want a stronger mix have them add limestone…you can order concrete from a company and have them bring it out and buggy it back to your shed floor. It will be easier and more cost effective than trying to mix bags. The floor only needs to be 6 inches deep but you will need to check with local building codes if you need a frost free footing…and that will add to concrete numbers. 10′x8′x6″ floor close to 2 yards of mud.
